Yard Space and Safety: Moving to Rural Bryan County

by Jim Peña

For families with young children, the dream is often a few acres where the kids can run. Moving from a city lot in Durant to rural land is a big transition.

The Reality of Acreage

More land means more freedom, but it also means more responsibility.

Perimeter Fencing

Some rural properties in SE Oklahoma are fenced for cattle, not necessarily for small children or pets. Budgeting for a "home envelope" fence (a smaller fenced area around the house) is a smart move for safety.

Water and Utilities

In town, you don't worry about the water. In the county, you need to know if you are on a rural water district or a well. If there is a well, an inspection is a non-negotiable step to ensure the water is safe for your family.

Landscape Hazards

With children under ten, you need to be aware of the natural landscape.

  • Water Features: Ponds and creeks are beautiful but require constant supervision.
  • Terrain: Check for steep drop-offs or areas that flood during heavy Oklahoma spring rains.

The Strategic Approach

If you are looking at land, bring a pair of boots and walk the entire property. Don't just look at the house. Look at where the kids will play and identify any potential "big issues" like old debris piles or unsecured outbuildings.
