Celebrating the Heart of our Schools: Teacher Appreciation Week
There is an old saying that teachers plant seeds that grow forever. In our community, those seeds are the future of our communities. As we approach Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4–8, 2026), it is time to turn our focus toward the men and women who show up every day for our students.
Whether your child is just starting out in Pre-K or finishing their journey at Durant High School, this week is our collective chance to say "thank you." We know that a thriving school system is the backbone of a strong local economy. When we support our educators, we invest in the long-term health of our town.
This week extends to every school district from Silo to Calera, to Caddo and beyond. Teachers do more than just follow a lesson plan. They are mentors, counselors, and cheerleaders. They often spend their own time and money to ensure their classrooms are a safe, engaging place to learn. No matter where you live, taking a moment to acknowledge that effort makes a world of difference in a teacher's morale.
Top 10 Ways to Show Your Appreciation
If you are looking for ways to give back, here are ten ideas to celebrate our educators:
-
A Handwritten Note: Never underestimate the power of a "thank you" from a student or parent. Many teachers keep these notes for their entire careers.
-
Local Coffee Gift Cards: Fuel their mornings with a gift card to a local favorite like Opera House Coffee.
-
Classroom Supplies: Ask what they are running low on. High-quality markers, dry-erase pens, or even extra boxes of tissues are always needed.
-
The "Lunch is on Me" Move: Coordinate with other parents to have a local restaurant cater lunch for the staff one day this week.
-
A Shoutout on Social Media: Publicly recognize a teacher who has made a difference for your family. Tag the school so everyone can see the impact.
-
Plants for the Classroom: A small succulent is a beautiful, low-maintenance way to brighten their desk.
-
Relaxation Kits: A candle, some nice tea, or a bath set helps them unwind after a long week of putting up with your kids :)
-
Volunteer Your Time: Ask the PTA or the front office if there are any tasks you can take off a teacher’s plate this week.
-
Door Decorations: Work with your student to create a "Thank You" poster for the classroom door.
-
Gift Cards for Classroom Resources: A gift card to Teachers Pay Teachers allows them to buy creative lesson plans without using their own paycheck.
