Whether you're a parent counting down the days, a student getting your backpack ready, or a local driver adjusting your morning commute, keeping our kids safe as they head back to the classroom is a community effort.

Here is everything you need to know about upcoming school start dates and how to stay safe on the roads this school year.

🚘 Navigating School Zones Safely

With school back in session, speed limits around campuses will drop significantly during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up hours.

• Slow Down: Speed limits in active school zones drop to 25 mph (or lower depending on local postings). Fines double for speeding in these zones.

• Put the Phone Away: Distracted driving is a leading cause of school zone accidents. Keep your eyes on the road and off your device—especially near crosswalks.

• Watch the Flashing Lights: Yellow flashing signs mean the school zone is active. Always yield to pedestrian crosswalks and obey crossing guards immediately.

🚌 School Bus Rules: When Do You Have to Stop?

Yellow buses will soon be back on main roads and rural routes across the county. Under Oklahoma law, failing to stop for a school bus carrying children carries heavy fines and points on your driver's license.

Here is a quick refresher on how to react when you see a bus:

1. Yellow Flashing Lights = Slow Down

When a bus turns on its yellow warning lights, it is preparing to stop. Slow down and be prepared to stop—do not try to speed up and pass before the red lights turn on.

2. Red Flashing Lights & Extended Stop Arm = STOP

When the stop arm extends and red lights flash, all traffic must come to a complete stop. Stay stopped at least 10 to 20 feet away until the stop arm is retracted and the bus begins moving again.

• Two-Lane & Multi-Lane Undivided Roads: Drivers in both directions must stop.

• Divided Highways: If a physical barrier or unpaved median separates the lanes, only traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.

🎒 Safety Tips for Bus Riders & Walking Students

Parents, take a few minutes before the first day to go over these quick safety rules with your kids:

• Arrive Early: Be at the bus stop 5 minutes before the scheduled arrival time so kids aren't rushing near traffic.

• The 10-Foot Rule: Teach children to stand at least 10 feet back (about five big steps) from the curb while waiting for the bus.

• Make Eye Contact: If crossing in front of a bus, make sure the driver sees you before stepping out. Never walk behind a school bus.

• Never Reach Under a Bus: If something falls near or under the bus, instruct your child to tell the driver immediately rather than reaching to grab it themselves.
