World Kindness Day in Durant: Turning Compassion into Action with Feeding Hope

by Jim Peña

Kindness often starts with something simple: an open door, a listening ear, or a warm, wholesome plate of food.

As communities around the globe pause to celebrate World Kindness Day, the call to look out for our neighbors takes center stage. While kind words can brighten a day, true kindness finds its strength when turned into action. At Feeding Hope, that action happens three evenings a week, right in the heart of Durant.

Guided by the call in Isaiah 58:10—“Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon”—our mission is simple: to make a difference, one meal at a time.

A Safe Seat at the Table

Hunger touches individuals and families across all walks of life, often unexpectedly. Feeding Hope operates as a community-based 501(c)(3) dedicated to ensuring that no one in Durant has to wonder where their next meal will come from.

Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, our doors at 424 E. Florida St. open to anyone in need of nourishment and fellowship—no requirements, no barriers, and no questions asked.

Beyond our regular weekly services, we build community all year long through events that bring neighbors together, such as our:

  • Harvest of Hope Thanksgiving Lunch

  • Back 2 School Bash

  • GLOWING with Hope 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run

  • Christmas in July & Night of Hope Christmas Gala

Growing to Serve: A Vision for Tomorrow

Kindness also means investing in the future of those we serve. Earlier this year, Feeding Hope acquired land diagonally across the street from our current location to expand our facilities and broaden our outreach ministry. As Durant grows, so does our commitment to be a stable foundation where faith feeds and love shelters.

How You Can Practice Kindness Today

World Kindness Day isn’t about grand gestures; it is about intentional care. If you are looking for tangible ways to brighten someone’s life right here in our hometown, here is how you can partner with Feeding Hope:

1. Stock the Essentials

Daily meal prep requires steady supplies. You can directly support dinner services by donating:

  • Cases of bottled water

  • To-go serving boxes, plastic bags, and disposable cutlery

  • Commercial napkin dispensers and napkin refills

2. Support Daily Operations

Financial contributions go straight to sourcing fresh ingredients for hot dinners and maintaining the facilities that keep our meal distributions running smoothly. Because Feeding Hope is an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit, every monetary gift is fully tax-deductible.

3. Give Your Time and Encouragement

Volunteers are the backbone of every service. From prepping plates to greeting guests with a warm smile, showing up to serve is one of the most powerful expressions of kindness our community has to offer.

Join Us

Whether through a donation of supplies, financial support, volunteer hours, or keeping our team and guests in your prayers, your support helps ensure that light continues to shine through the darkness.
