Memorial Day – Remembering the Heroes Who Gave Everything

by Jim Peña

Memorial Day is more than backyard cookouts, long weekends, and the unofficial start of summer. It is a day set aside to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States military.

The history of Memorial Day dates back to the years following the Civil War. Originally called “Decoration Day,” communities across America gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and tributes of remembrance. In 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of a Union veterans organization, officially established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to honor those lost in military service.

Over time, the observance expanded to recognize American military personnel who died in all wars. In 1971, Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May.

Today, families celebrate Memorial Day in many different ways. Some attend ceremonies or visit cemeteries to place flowers and flags on veterans’ graves. Others participate in local parades, moments of silence, or charitable events supporting military families.

For many Americans, Memorial Day also brings together family and friends for cookouts, lake days, and time outdoors. While these traditions have become part of the holiday, they also serve as a reminder of the freedoms we enjoy because of those who sacrificed everything.

One national tradition is the National Moment of Remembrance, observed at 3:00 PM local time on Memorial Day. Americans are encouraged to pause for one minute to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

As we gather this Memorial Day, may we remember the true meaning behind the holiday — gratitude, remembrance, and honoring the courage of those who never made it home.

How does your family celebrate Memorial Day? Do you have traditions that help honor those who served? We would love to hear how you spend this meaningful holiday.
